    • + In the year of the Lord’s incarnation 784. I, Ealhmund, king of Kent, give to you, Hwitred, honourable abbot, and to your [monastic] community living in the place that is called Reculver land of twelve sulungs that is called Sheldwich with all that rightly belongs to it, free from all secular service and from all royal tribute except military service [and] the construction of bridge and fortress. If anyone, which God forbid!, should attempt to act against this gift of mine, may he incur the wrath of Almighty God and be condemned with the wicked and sinners to the avenging fires without end. I, Jænberht, archbishop of Kent, agreeing and subscribing, confirm this gift of the king and the excommunication.
