Iccirco terrenis ac caducis eterna celestis patrie premia mercanda sunt. Quapropter ego Baldred aliquam terram Aldhelmo abbati impendere decreui, id est iuxta flumen Abon et circa siluam que uocatur <Stercanlei et Cnebbanburg> .c. manentes; et ab eo .c. cassatos pro uice suscepi, id est ex plaga orientalis silue cuius uocabulum est Bradon; et hoc cum consilio et confirmatione Kentwini regis et omnium principium ac senatorum eius roboratum est. Si quis contra hec scripta uenire temptauerit, sciat se ante tribunal eterni iudicis et coram sanctis angelis rationem redditurum.     • In the name of our Lord God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. We bring nothing into this world but neither can we carry anything away. On that account we must purchase the eternal rewards of the heavenly fatherland with earthly and transitory things. Wherefore I, Baldred, have decided to bestow some land on Abbot Aldhelm, that is, 100 hides near the River Avon and around the wood that is called Stercanlei and Cnebbanburg and I have received 100 hides from him in return, that is, from the eastern part of the wood whose name is Braydon, and this was strengthened by the counsel and confirmation of King Centwine and all the principes and senatores [? members of the witan]. If anyone should attempt to act against these writings, let him know that he will have to render account before the judgment-seat of the eternal Judge and before the holy angels.
