  • Here is made known in this document how Wynflæd brought forth her witnesses at Woolmer before King Æthelred — namely Archbishop Sigeric [Canterbury] and Bishop Ordbriht [Selsey], and Ealdorman Ælfric [of central Wessex] and Ælfthryth the king’s mother — in order for them all to witness that Ælfric had given Wynflæd the estates at Hagbourne and Bradfield in return for the estate at Datchet. Then the king sent straightway to Leofwine by the Archbishop and by those who had been witnesses there with him, and made this known to him. But he would not [accept it] unless it were referred to the shire court. So that was then done. Then the king sent his seal, by means of Abbot Ælfhere [Bath], to that court at Cuckhamsley, and greeted all the councillors that were summoned there — namely Bishop Æthelsige [Sherborne] and Bishop Æscwig [Dorchester] and Abbot Ælfric [St Albans] and all the shire — and bade and commanded that they should reconcile Wynflæd and Leofwine as justly as they considered most just for ever. And Archbishop Sigeric sent his testimony thither and Bishop Ordbriht his. Then Wynflæd was informed that she might claim it as hers. Then she brought forth the proofs of ownership with the support of Ælfthryth, the king’s mother, namely first Abbot Wulfgar [Abingdon], and Wulfstan the priest, and Ælfic the æthelings’ steward, and Eadwine, and Eadelm, and Ælfelm, and Ælfwine, and Ælfweard, and Eadwold, and Eadric, and Ælfgar, and Abbess Eadgifu [Nunnaminster, Winchester], and Abbess Liofrun [Reading], and Æthelhild, and Eadgifu of Lewknor and her sister and daughter, and Wulfwyn, and Æthelgifu, and Ælfwaru, and Ælfgifu, and Æthelflæd and many a good thegn and good lady, whom we cannot all list, so that all came forward there in full, both the men and the women. Then the councillors who were there declared it better that the oath be then set aside than given; for afterwards there would be no friendship and he would be bidden to restore and redeem the dispossession and [to pay] his wergeld to the king. Then he set aside the oath and handed the estate over uncontested to Bishop Æthelsige [on the understanding] that he would not thenceforth lay claim to it. Then she [Wynflæd] was instructed that she should bring his father’s gold and silver, all that she had. Then she did, so far as she dared, to protect her oath. Then he was still not content, unless she would swear that his riches were all there. Then she declared that that she could not, for her part, nor he for his. And as witness of this was Ælfgar the king’s reeve, and Byrhtric, and Leofric of Whitchurch and many good men besides him.
