    Translation

    • (a) This is Æthelweard’s enactment, with the counsel of Archbishop Oda and the community at Christ Church. That is, that Æthelweard shall enjoy the estate at Ickham in freedom for his lifetime, with the leave of God and the archbishop and the community. Then after his day Eadric, if he still lives, [shall enjoy the estate] for his day, for the payment as is agreed, that is £5 and one day’s food-rent each year to the brethren, that is: 40 sesters of ale, 60 loaves, a wether, a flitch [of bacon] and an ox’s haunch, 2 cheeses, 4 hens and 5 pence for the table. And this shall be rendered at Michaelmas. And he shall be entitled to every fine. And if any criminal seeks out the community, let his case be settled, as is appropriate, according to the measure of the crime. However, if it were to happen that Æthelweard should live longer than Eadric, then Æthelgifu shall succeed with the same payment as is agreed hereabove, for her day. But if it were to happen that Æthelweard should live longer than Eadric or Æthelgifu, and that he should endure those afflictions, then after his day the estate and the landbook shall be delivered up with himself [i.e., with his body] for his own benefit and for that of those from the land came to him. Archbishop Oda is witness of this and Beorhthere, mass-priest, Cænwig, mass-priest, Wealdred, mass-priest, Sigefrith, deacon, Oswald, deacon, Frithegod, deacon, Sigered, deacon, Heahred, deacon, Sigered, priest, Beorhtmund, Eadsige, Eadhelm, Beorhtsige, Æthelhelm, Beorhtsige, Beorhtwig, Leofric, Sigehelm, Wulfred, Cenric, Edward :~ Eadhelm, abbot at St Augustine's, was witness of this and Beorhtsige, deacon, Eorlbyrht, mass-priest, Rothin, mass-priest, Bertram, mass-<priest>, Beornmund, priest, and the three Ælfstans, Æthelwald, Edmund, Wynhelm, Cynesige, Eadric, Leofing, Eadsige, Wulfhelm, Sigefrith, Leofric, Leofstan, Eadstan, Edmund, [...]stan, king's thegn, Beorhtric, Wihtgar, Wulfstan, and the three fellowships of residents within the walls of the town and residents outside the walls of the town and many diners :~ (b) This is the agreement that Eadric has with the community at Christ Church, that is that Eadric should give five pounds to the community as is due (two to the elders and three to the whole community), on condition that he hold the estate with full consent of the old and the young, with the necessary things, both great and small, that belong to the land, uncontested by any living man.
