    Translation

    • In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Here it is declared how Eadwine of Caddington made his will. In the first place to God, for his soul, the land at Watford for St Albans; and then to his lord, as heriot, 4 horses - 2 saddled and 2 unsaddled - and 2 swords. Next, the land at Sundon and at Streatley and at Caddington to my son Leofwine; and in addition the land at Hærlea and at Pirian and the land at Putnoe and at Barley also to my son Leofwine. And to my wife the land at Weston and Knebworth, and the use of all the lands common to them both, for as long as she remains a widow; and when she takes a husband, Æthelwine is to take care of the child, and of all the property which I have bequeathed to him, until the child is himself capable. But if some misfortune should befall the child, not involving any dispute, then Æthelwine is to succeed to the land at Hærlea, and to Putnoe, and the land at Pirian is to go to Abingdon, from which I bought it before, and Æthelric my brother's son is to succeed to Caddington, and his brother Eadric to Sundon, and Ælfric my sister's son to Streatley, and after their days the land is to pass within my kindred, always in the male line. And the land at Barley is to go to St Albans, also after the child's day. And I wish that the best 20 oxen and cows be taken from all of my property, with my body, to the place where I wish to rest, that is at St Albans. And the land which Leofric the Bald occupies, and Cynesige the Short, is to belong to my church at Sundon as a privilege for ever.
