  • In the name of God the supreme and most high. The distinguished champion stated in the divine scriptures: ‘All things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.’ For that reason, the Divine Word, as we have mentioned above, predicts dreadfully an abundance of things to those profiting by it, that, disdaining the transitory things of this life and copying spiritual things, we shall hasten to the heavenly realms. Wherefore, I, Edmund, inflamed with a desire for the heavenly kingdom, with the support of the Divine Will king of the English and of many neighbouring peoples, freely bestow on a certain adopted son, my faithful minister, Æthelhere by name, five hides there where the common people by ancient custom and oral report call Weston, on account of his loving service, to the extent that he should give me while alive pleasing service, both being faithful in mind and humble in deeds. And after my death may he be unchanging in that same faithfulness and obedience to whomsoever of my friends I would wish. And so may all coming later who possess the aforementioned land faithfully adhere to this judgment, as it is proper for a servant to maintain faithfulness in the presence of God and all His chosen ones, with the meadows and pastures and also with the woods and thickets; as a donor I will give the liberty to possess these prosperously and to hold them permanently during the course of this transitory world and a living breath cleaves to the corrupt flesh. After him, moreover, as we have affirmed he may leave it to whichever heir he wishes. May the aforementioned land become free from every servile burden, with all those things that rightfully belong to it, except for these three, military service [and] a share in the building of bridge and fortress. If anyone indeed inflamed by the fire-brand of the black Devil against this judgment, which I neither wish for nor desire, should wish to contrive evil or impair anything, let him know that he will be thrust beneath the water of the River Styx and committed to foul torture in a pitch-black prison with those impious ones speaking evil against the law of God, unless first driven by the exhortation of Christ he should hastily come to a state of penitence while alive. These are the boundaries.
