    • The fraudulent instigator of vices deludes human minds thus with many tricks, now, I say, he deceives, as it were, with the promised courses of a longer life; now he stubbornly entices with transitory things as if they were necessities; in the meantime he also suggests that the stygian punishments of Hell are like trivial and superficial things in order that he might feebly destroy the hearts of wretched men in desire and lascivious behaviour and lead them with him encaged to hell. But holy men in a spirit of foreboding, recognising the bestial ambushes, crowned with the shield of good will unceasingly and zealously bring to an end with holy works whatever they perceive to be earthly in themselves, whereby they are presented with their merits laid bare before Jesus Christ, glowing with the light of splendour most like to a Titan. In celebration of these men the trumpet of Holy Scripture resounding pours forth by re-echoing amongst other evidence these two texts] that should be the more readily heard by our ears, ‘Blessed are those whose garments are white in the sight of the Lord’ and in another place, ‘the just shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father’. Filled with love for the sight of this kingdom of the Lord and Father, therefore, where assured nourishment remains for us without doubt, about which the Lord said, ‘blessed will he be who eats bread in the kingdom of God’. I, EADRED, KING [and] sole ruler by Divine Grace of the whole of Albion and chief officer to Christ my king, enthroned forever on the throne of the everlasting kingdom, and with the treasures of transitory kinds granted to me by the Same, in the fourth year of my earthly reign following reception of the office, at the church dedicated to His name that cannot be comprehended in the city of Canterbury, Archbishop ODA presiding over the metropolitan see and carrying the keys of the heavenly kingdom over the country of Britain, most humbly and devoutly with a sincere heart am giving that monastery of Reculver, assessed at twenty-six hides within and without with all things rightly belonging to it, whether of shores or fields or marshes, just as the lands are published below, as a right in perpetuity as long as Christianity shall flourish in return for washing away my transgressions perpetually. If, however, anyone relying on the tyrannical power of royal or episcopal—or a man of any—rank should attempt, which God forbid!, to destroy this decision granted by God to me or should sever even a foot of this gift from the aforementioned church, unless he first sweeps away this enormous crime by penance, may he be aware that he has incurred blame for his sacrilege and will be damned by the Lord Jesus Christ forever without any consolation of a reduction. This document was written in the year of the Lord’s incarnation 949 with the unanimous consent of the men of orthodox believe whose names can be seen to be distinguished by their written nature below: + I, Eadred, with the protection of Divine Grace king of Albion, presiding, marked the top of this charter with the sign of the holy cross I, Oda, metropolitan archbishop [of Canterbury], presiding over the royal governance, have marked with the sign of the cross this gift of munificence that has been granted I, Wulfstan, archbishop supported by the summit of the metropolitan office in the city of York, have written down the cross on this generous gift. I, Ælfheah, bishop of the church of Winchester, have confirmed this gift with the sign of the cross I, Æthelgar, bishop of the church of Crediton, have corroborated this generous gift I, Ælfric, bishop [of Ramsbury or Hereford], joint stipulator of this gift, have delineated the sign of the cross I, Wulfsige, bishop [of Sherborne], have subscribed the gift of this bountiful present with the sign of salvation [i.e., the cross] I, Theodred, bishop [of London], have added in confirmation this affixing of the cross as proof I, Alfred, bishop [of Selsey], at the instigation of God have strengthened the gift with the sign of the cross of Christ I, Beorhtsige, bishop [of ?Rochester], have made a corroboration of this gift + I, Cenwald, bishop [of Worcester], gave consent + I, Cynesige, bishop [of Lichfield], showed unanimity + I, Wulfhelm, bishop [of Wells], bestowed permission + I, Eadhelm, abbot [of St Augustine’s], showed [myself] devoted to this I, Oswulf, dux, agreed and humbly assisted I, Edmund, dux, with pleasure am favourable to the plan + I, Æthelstan, dux, consented with a resolute spirit + I, Eadgifu, mother of the aforementioned king, with a heart rejoicing at the aforementioned generous gift to Christ have most humbly marked with the corroboration of the mark bringing salvation [i.e., the cross] + I, Dunstan, unworthy abbot [of Glastonbury], at the behest of King Eadred my lord have composed by dictation this charter of ownership and have written it with the joints of my own fingers. <+> + I say [that] this portion of land is seen to be surrounded by these boundaries. [MS A:] First on the north side and on the west, from yfinga headland out to the sea, so forth along the sand to north mouth. [MS B:] First on the north side Æthelferth’s land, so forth along the sand to north mouth. From north mouth to Mac(c)a’s brook. Then to the race-course; from the race-course to Eanflæd’s mouth. From Eanflæd’s mouth to the boundary-creek’s mouth; <from the boundary-creek’s mouth> back to Eanflæd’s mouth. Then on the east side: to mill-creek’s mouth to south farmstead. From the south farmstead along the brook to Hathemæringe. Then on the south side: from Heathumær’s property to the tree-stumps; \from the tree-stumps/ along the street as far as St Augustine’s boundary. <From St Augustine’s boundary> [MS B only] to the brook; along the brook to the stone bridge. From the Christ Church boundary to the old hedge. On the west side: from the old hedge to the coarse grass. Then west from the coarse grass to the spring; to the king’s boundary. From the king’s boundary to the goats’ enclosure. <Westward then to Yfinga headland and so out to sea.> [Interlinear correction in MS A only.] Then there are four sulungs within the river of the land that belongs to Reculver; on Thanet four sulungs; and one pasture on the waru that belongs to Reculver. Then is [the total] of all this land twenty-five sulungs, and one sulung at Chilmington, south by the Weald, for the repair of the church. Short version: [+] In the year of the Lord’s incarnation 949, I, Eadred, king, with the venerable man, Oda, archbishop and the father of the whole of Britain being present and Eadgifu, the queen, my mother, have given to the Christ Church in the city of Canterbury the monastery of Reculver with the whole vill and all rightly belonging to it, free from all secular servitude except three: military service [and] the building of bridge and fortress. And I, Dunstan, unworthy abbot, composed the charter thereupon at the command of my lord, King Eadred and wrote it with my own hand.
