    Translation

    • The One Enthroned on High ruling eternally. The zeal for wisdom reveals clearly to all searching zealously with a rigorous effort of mind that the end of the relapsed world is discerned to be approaching with the dangers of this life attacking with very great terror, as the truthful pronouncement of Christ makes known, Who says, ‘Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom’, etcetera. Wherefore I, Edgar, king of the whole of Britain, have bestowed by perpetual right a certain parcel of land, namely, two and a half hides in the place that notable men call by name Stanton Prior, on a certain reeve faithful to my town who is called by the known name of Ælfsige by knowledgeable men of this country, for his most devoted obedience, so that while alive he may enjoy having possession [of it] with all its appurtenances, namely, meadows, pastures [and] woods, and after the end of his life he may leave it exempt to whichever heirs he wishes. Moreover, may the aforementioned land be free from every yoke of earthly servitude, with three exceptions, namely, the fixed military service [and] the restoring of bridge and fortress. If anyone, therefore, should wish to change this gift of ours into something other than we have decided, may he, deprived of the fellowship of the holy church of God, be punished by the gloomy eternal fires of Hell perpetually with Judas, the betrayer of Christ, and his accomplices, if he does not make amends with appropriate penance because he has offended against our decision. The aforementioned land is surrounded on either side by these boundaries. These are the land-boundaries at Stanton Prior. First on the west head of wynlmæd down; then to the old ditch [or ‘dyke’]; then up to Wineca’s burh; then from the burh crosswise over the small wood; then forth always along the woodbank to Wansdyke; then from Wansdyke to the north of the burh; then along the boundary to Corston Brook; then up along the brook to the deep place; then south along the brook to the ditch [or ‘dyke’]; then along the ditch [or ‘dyke’] to the Bath high-road; then west along the high-road back to the west headland of Wilmington; then Ælfsige’s two-and-a-half hides is within the ten hides. From the year of the Lord’s incarnation 963 this charter was written, the witnesses agreeing whose names are written here. I, EDGAR, king of the English, agreed. + I, Dunstan, archbishop [of Canterbury], confirmed. + I, Oscytel, archbishop [of York], confirmed. + I, Oswulf, bishop [of Ramsbury], confirmed. + I, Beorhthelm, bishop [of Winchester or Wells], acquiesced. + I, Æthelwold, abbot [of Abingdon], agreed. + I, Ælfhere, dux. + I, Ælfheah, dux. + I, Æthelstan, dux. + I, Æthelwine, dux. + I, Beorhtfrith, minister. + Ælfwine, minister. + I, Æthelsige, minister. + Wulfstan, minister. + Ælfsige, minister. +
