A.D. 1042 x 1052. Statement by the Lady Ælfgifu (Emma), mother of King Edward, to the effect that she had acquired from King Cnut the estate at Newington, Oxon., on behalf of Christ Church, when it was forfeited by Ælfric. The king then granted it to the community. English

    • I, the lady Ælfgifu, mother of King Edward, obtained from King Cnut, my lord, the estate at Newington and what thereto belongs to Christ Church, when the thegn Ælfric had forfeited it into the king’s possession. And the king then gave it to Christ Church, as land to sustain the community, for both of our souls.
