    Translation

    • Abbot Wulfwald sends friendly greetings to Bishop Giso [Wells] and Abbot Æthelnoth [Glastonbury] and Tofi the Sheriff and all the thegns in Somerset. And I inform you that King Edward my lord gave me the land at ‘Evesty’ that my father owned, and the four homesteads at Ashwick and the acres of meadowland that belong to them, and in woodland and in open land as much pasture as I need for my cattle and the cattle of my men. And all as free in all things as the king’s own inland, to give and to grant before my day and after my day, to whomsoever it pleases me best. Now I inform you all that I have given the land to St Peter’s minster at Bath, to provide clothing and food to the monks, all as fully and completely as the king gave it to me in all things. And if anyone increases my gift, that I have given to St Peter’s minster, may God Almighty increase his life here in this world, and when he goes hence, may Christ give him the kingdom of heaven as a reward. And if anyone thinks to diminish this, may God Almighty diminish him here in this world, and when he must go hence, may his dwelling be in the abyss of hell, unless before his end he makes amends very severely.
