  • + Here it is declared in this document how King Cnut and the Lady Ælfgifu granted Eadsige their priest, when he became a monk, that he might dispose of the estate at Appledore as might be most agreeable to him. Then he gave it to Christ Church to the servants of God for his soul, and bought it back from the community for his day and Eadwine’s for four pounds, on condition that every year three weys of cheese and three binds of eels shall be paid to Christ Church from the estate; and after his death and Eadwine’s the estate shall pass to Christ Church, with ‘the meat and the men’ as it may then be furnished, for Eadsige’s soul. And he bought the estate at Warehorne from the community for his day and Eadwine’s for four pounds also, and that estate is to pass to Christ Church along with the other after his day and Eadwine’s with the crops that may then be on it. And [he grants] the estate at Berwick in his day, which he earned from his lord, King Cnut; and he also grants in his day for his soul the estate at Orpington —to Christ Church as clothing-land for the servants of God — which he bought for eighty marks of ‘white’ silver according to the weight[-standard] of the husting. And he also grants the estates at Palstre and Wittersham, after his day and Eadwine’s, then with the others on behalf of his soul, as property to sustenance of the servants of God. He grants this bequest to the community on condition that they ever support him well and be faithful to him during his life and after it. And if through any evil counsel they break this undertaking to him, then it shall lie in his power how he may then wish to dispose of his rightful property. In witness of this is: King Cnut and the Lady Ælfgifu and Archbishop Æthelnoth and Abbot Ælfstan and the community at St Augustine’s and Brithric the Young and Æthelric Bigga and Thored, Thurkell’s nephew, and Tofi and the priest Ælfwine and the priest Eadwold and all the king’s counsellors. There are three of these documents: one is at Christ Church; and one at St Augustine’s; and one Eadsige has himself.
