- + In the name of the Lord God our [Saviour] Jesus Christ. To pious and devout requests, especially from those faithfully serving God, it is necessary that every man who lives according to God and hopes and desires to be rewarded by God happily and sincerely give assent, since it is certain that the more easily one can obtain those things that each has craved from God, the more willingly one has granted those things to men that have been lawfully requested, because it becomes acceptable to God the Generous Giver of all good things when it is done out of love for Him and for the benefit of those serving Him. Wherefore I, Eardwulf, king of Kent, grant to you, venerable Abbot Heahberht, and your community resident in the monastery that is called Reculver, for the love of Almighty God and the hope of eternal reward as you earnestly sought, land from my property, that is, of one sulung in the place that is called Perhamstede with fields, wood, pastures, hunting grounds and all necessary things belonging to it in conformity with its boundaries, namely those ancient and most established by lasting tradition among the inhabitants, to be possessed freely in return for the salvation of my soul and the support of your prayers. Insofar as whatever you might wish to be done with that, in giving it or adapting it or in exchanging it, you have the power freely [to do so] forever. Moreover this small piece of land is held in the realm of the Kentish dwellers where it is called Heahham and adjoins on the south and the west nine of those sulungs that earlier were your lord’s and that clearly were given to you by my father, Eadberht. Whoever of any ecclesiastical rank or secular office should presume to oppose with a envious and ill-disposed mind these thing that out of respect for God we have granted for the benefit of the servants of Christ or in any way should attempt to make this aforementioned gift of ours ineffectual, let him know that without a doubt both in the present world he will be justly made excommunicate from the body and blood of Christ on account of the deservedness of his malice and in the future will be separated far from those who on account of their works of piety will deserve to stand on the right-hand side of Christ and hear that blessed voice, ‘Come, ye blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world’. I have taken care to validate canonically that this charter remains in its steadfastness likewise with the agreement of our venerable bishop, Eardwulf, and also my principes, as is evident below. + I, Eardwulf, king of Kent, validated the aforementioned gift of mine in my own hand with the mark of the holy cross. + I, Eardwulf, bishop of the church of Rochester, agreeing, subscribed. + Mark of the hand of Folcwine. + Mark of the hand of Beornham. + Mark of the hand of Wihtbrord. + Mark of the hand of Wealhhun. + Mark of the hand of Æthelnoth.
