    • Our Lord Jesus Christ ruling in perpetuity. Assuredly it established as known and manifest to all wise men that future words and deeds frequently recede from memory because of upheaval caused by manifold distresses and the derangement of thought, unless they are preserved by a written warranty and protection and recalled to memory. For that reason, I, Eadwig, king of the English and governor and ruler of other peoples resident in the surrounding area, grant in perpetuity for the salvation and good of my soul 10 hides to the monks resident and serving God in the monastery of St Peter, Prince of the Apostles, which is known to have been built in a remarkable construction at Bath, with the consent of my witan and at the request of my venerable priest Wulfgar, in the place that is called in the account of old men Ford, that the aforementioned gift be free from every fiscal due and royal exaction, with the exception of the common task of military service and providing defences for bridge and fortress, with all that rightfully belongs to it, both in fields, meadows, pastures and thickets, and in things great and small. Truly, if anyone should try to violate this gift of ours through any crafty device, let him not deserve pardon in this world nor receive mercy from the key-bearer of the celestial kingdom [i.e., St Peter] in the future, unless he first choose to do penance in this world. This land is seen to be surrounded by these boundaries. These are the land-boundaries at BATHFORD. First from the Avon along the street to the single stone; from the stone to Beonna’s wood; from Beonna’s wood to the wæfer [a name for By Brook]; along the wæfer to Wibyrht’s wood; from Wibyrht’s wood to hnæs wood; from hnæs wood to cunuca wood; from cunuca wood to the Avon. This charter was written in the year of the Lord’s incarnation 957, in indiction 15. I, Eadwig, king of the English, have granted unchangeably. + I, Edgar, brother of the same king, swiftly consented. + I, Oda, archbishop [of Canterbury], validated with the sign of the cross. + I, Ælfsige, bishop [of Winchester], imprinted with the mark of the holy cross. + I, Beorhthelm, bishop [of London, Selsey or Wells], confirmed. + I, Cenwald, bishop [of Worcester], acquiesced. + I, Oscytel, bishop [of Dorchester], marked with the sign of the cross. + I, Oswulf, bishop [of Ramsbury], confirmed. + I, Ælfwald, bishop [of Crediton], agreed. + I, Athulf, bishop [of Hereford], subscribed. + I, Daniel, bishop [of Cornwall], decided. + Æthelstan, dux. + Edmund, dux. + Ælfhere, dux. + Æthelsige, dux. + Æthelwald, dux. + Byrhtnoth, dux. + Ælfheah, minister. + Ælfsige, minister. + Ælfwine, minister. + Æthelgeard, minister. + Alfred, minister. + Ælfric, minister. + Ælfsige, minister. + Ælfwig, minister. + Wulfgar, minister. + Ælfgar, minister. + Beorthfrith, minister. <+> Æthelmær, minister. + Wulfric, minister. + Wulfstan, minister. + Eadric, minister. + Beornric, minister. +
