- From the year of the Lord’s incarnation 961. I, Eadwig, through the Favour of Divine Grace king and chief officer of the whole of Albion, have granted as a perpetual possession a certain parcel of land, estimated at five hides, long ago removed foolishly [reading ‘inepte’ for MS ‘indepte’] and pervertedly from the sanctuary of the blessed Peter, primate of the apostolic company, by restoring and recovering [it] in the place that is called Weston, for the church of the blessed one even aforementioned, the planter of ecclesiastical seeds, which is reported to be located at Bath, with sincere affection and deepest inspiration from the impulse of divine fear, free apart from [the fortifying of] fortress [and] bridge and military service. We have assuredly so composed this charter of gift in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ that none of our successors, as long as Christian jurisdiction flourishes, should dare violate this in the slightest degree. If anyone with presumptuous effort should attempt this, which we do not want, may this keep him in the forbidding torture of Hell without any [chance] of being revived. The senatores [? members of the witan] of the whole of Albion are jointly desirous of this gift, but especially those whose names are written below are cited as having supported [it] with unanimous confirmation and consent. I, Eadwig, king of the English, have impressed this [charter of] gift with the sign of the holy + I, Edgar, [his] son, confirmed. + I, Oda, archbishop [of Canterbury], made the sign of the cross. + I, Ælfsige, bishop [of Winchester], agreed. + I, Oscytel, bishop [of Dorchester], had this written down. + I, Beorhthelm, bishop [of London, Selsey or Wells], approved. + I, Daniel, bishop [of Cornwall], subscribed. + Æthelstan, dux. + Edmund, dux. + Ælfhere, dux. + Æthelsige, dux. + Æthelmund, dux. + Æthelwald, dux. + Ælfsige, minister. + Beorhtfrith, minister. + Ælfheah, minister. + Æthelmær, minister. + Æthelgeard, minister. + Ælfwine, minister. + Then here are the boundaries. First from corti meadow up to the ash-tree; from the ash-tree to play-ditch; from play-ditch by Swinecombe’s head to crow’s hill; from crow’s hill up to the down; west along the edge to sport way; from sport way to Ceol’s coomb; from Chelscombe east along the edge to the walls; from the wall to the estate-centre; from the estate-centre to hay way; along hay way to the solitary <?thorn>; from the solitary <thorn> to Sele[he]ard’s pool; from Sele[he]ard’s pool out to the Avon; then back first on the old lane to muck-pits; up on Penn Hill; from Penn Hill to the tall ash-tree; from the tall ash-tree up along the way to black wood to the old ditch [or ‘dyke’]; from the old ditch [or ‘dyke’] by the coppiced wood to wolf valley; from wolf valley by the way; along the way to (?) Ælli’s barrow; from (?) Ælli’s barrow to the leap-gate; from the leap-gate along the wall to flax coomb; from Lyncombe to Midridge way; from Midridge way to the coppiced wood [or ‘trench’] of Stutheard’s coomb; from Stutheard’s coomb to starling ford; along the brook to the estate-centre [i.e., Weston].
