  • Since our Ecclesiastes sufficiently shows, not only through parables but also by plain and evident fact, that all worldly things are worthless and a disturbance of the mind, why is there reliance on the panting desire of human effort to possess those things which like shadows pass away never to return, but we should attempt to set out all the more hastily because we believe the end of the world is now approaching? Wherefore the Truth [i.e., Christ], ‘Walk while ye have the light’ and the Apostle, ‘Seek your affection on things above, not on things on the earth’. Wherefore, I, Eadwig, king of Albion, as the sole creator of law will take care to devote effort to other ecclesiastical matters, so that through the merits and prayers of the saints I might deserve to be joined to their number in heaven.
