    Translation

    • Since our Ecclesiastes sufficiently shows, not only through parables but also by plain and evident fact, that all worldly things are worthless and a disturbance of the mind, why is there reliance on the panting desire of human effort to possess those things which like shadows pass away never to return, but we should attempt to set out all the more hastily because we believe the end of the world is now approaching? Wherefore the Truth [i.e., Christ], ‘Walk while ye have the light’ and the Apostle, ‘Seek your affection on things above, not on things on the earth’. Wherefore, I, Eadwig, king of Albion, as the sole creator of law will take care to devote effort to other ecclesiastical matters, so that through the merits and prayers of the saints I might deserve to be joined to their number in heaven. Wherefore both 5 hides at Olveston and another 5 hides at Cold Ashton, which my paternal uncle, King Æthelstan, granted to the church of St Peter, prince of the apostles, which is located in the city of Bath, now indeed wrenched away by tyranny, our imperial power has succeeded in returning and our grant is offered anew to the same aforementioned church into its perpetual ecclesiastical possession, so that posterity will not dare to violate this gift offered to God and the Apostle, freed from every royal burden, except for military service [and] the fortifying of bridge and fortress. Whoever might try to pillage this from now on or in some other way vex it, may he be cursed by Christ the Judge. These are the bounds of the five hides at Olveston. First on ring spring; from ring spring <to> Dudda’s valley; along the valley to the old boundary ditch [or ‘dyke’]; along the ditch [or ‘dyke’] due west to smita pill; from smita pill due west to black ford; from black ford into Redham; from Redham to the west end of Chelsham; then due north to Redwick; to the old road; along the street to Northwick; from Northwick back [perhaps ‘east’] along the street to Bilsham; from Bilsham straight back [perhaps ‘due east’] to the great pill; from the great pill to the narrow pill; along the pill to white paddock; from white paddock to the boundary ditch [or ‘dyke’]; along the ditch [or ‘dyke’] to the north corner of marsh meadow; then due north along the ditch [or ‘dyke’] to hollow pill; along hollow pill back to the boundary ditch [or ‘dyke’]; then back [or ‘east’] by the ditch [or ‘dyke’] to the stone bridge; from the bridge south to Wærbyrd’s croft; all around it back on to the boundary ditch [or ‘dyke’]; along the ditch [or ‘dyke’] to boundary coomb; along the middle of the coomb to the old street; along the street to Bæda’s nook; from Bæda’s nook due east to rye coomb; north to the slender oak; from the oak along the coomb to pis leah; from pis leah to dog thorn; from the thorn-tree to Eada’s meadows; from the meadow to fotmæle; from fotmæle due east to wolf-pit; from the pit to the crooked oak; from the oak to the east of the projecting piece of ploughland at long wood; from long wood to Wolfridge; from Wolfridge to green hill; from the hill to Mann’s pit; from Mann’s pit to the head of accel coomb; then due west on the old stone row to the old beech-tree; from the beech-tree to Cuca’s hollows to the ash-tree; from the ash-tree to Sheepcombe to the brook; along the brook to the boundary; then due north along ludes coomb to the old high-road; west along the high-road to Ælla’s tree to hollow way; from hollow way to hawk hill; from hawk hill along the old ditch [or ‘dyke’] back to ring spring.
