    Translation

    • (a) + Being master of the government of the whole of Albion far and wide by the approving command of the Ruler seated on high, I am not unmindful on account of this that things granted to me should be renewed in order that I might actively earn eternal things from them. Wherefore I, EDGAR, king of the whole of Britain, have bestowed a certain parcel of land, namely, seven hides, in the place that noted men call by name VANGE on a certain minister very faithful to me who is called by knowledgeable men of this fatherland by the noble name of INGERAM as a perpetual inheritance in return for his most devoted obedience so that he may have it, enjoying possession while he is alive, with all its appurtenances, namely, meadows, pastures [and] woods and after the end of his life he may leave it immune to whatever heirs he might wish. Moreover may the aforementioned land be free from all yoke of earthly servitude, three being excepted, namely, a share of army service [and] the restoring of bridge and fortress. If anyone, therefore, should wish to change this gift into something other than we have decided, may he, deprived of the fellowship of the holy church of God, be punished eternally by the sorrowful fires of Hell together with Judas, the betrayer of Christ and his accomplices, if he does not atone with a penance appropriate to the wrong he has done against our decree. This land is surrounded by these boundaries. These are the estate boundaries for Vange. First from the mouth of the broad creek as far as Bifleot [‘by-creek’]. Then along Ælfwynn’s boundary as far as the street. Then east along the street as far as Ælfwold’s boundary. North along Ælfwold’s boundary as far as the main road. From there east along the main road as far as the bridge. From the bridge north along the street as far as Dudd’s corner. Then east to Cyneferth’s boundary. South along the boundary to Byrhtferth’s boundary. Along the boundary, south into the creek to the east of ash-tree house. Along the creek, then back to the wide creek. And the wood at Tettincgleage. This charter was written in the year of the Lord’s incarnation 963 with these witnesses agreeing whose names are noted below. + I, Edgar, king of the English, have agreed. + I, Dunstan, archbishop [of Canterbury], have corroborated. + I, Oscytel, archbishop [of York], have confirmed. + I, Oswulf, bishop [of Ramsbury], have confirmed. + I, Beorhthelm, bishop [of Winchester or Wells], have acquiesced. + I, Athulf, bishop [of Elmham]. + I, Oswald, bishop [of Worcester]. + I, Beorhthelm, bishop [of Winchester or Wells]. + I, Ælfstan, bishop [of London or Rochester]. + I, Eadhelm, bishop [of Selsey]. + I, Æthelwold, abbot [of Abingdon]. + I, Ælfhere, dux. + I, Ælfheah, dux. + I, Æthelstan, dux. + I, Æthelwine, dux. + I, Beorhtfrith, minister. + I, Ælfwine, minister. + I, Æthelsige, minister. + I, Wulfhelm, minister. + I, Wulfstan, minister. (b) + This charter Ingeram gave with land to Archbishop Dunstan.
