    Translation

    • In the year 965 from the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. I, Edgar, through the pleasure of Divine Grace king and chief officer of the whole of Albion, have bestowed completely freely a small piece of land, estimated at twice-four hides less a half [i.e., seven and a half hides], as a perpetual possession in the place that is called Stanton Priors on Abbot Æscwig for the church of St Peter that is located in the city of Bath. Truly I beseech this abbot and all who examine the dictates of this document that they should not cease to pour forth entreaties for me in their prayers. And this parcel of land, free except for fortress [and] bridge [work and] military service, is seen to be surrounded by these boundaries. First at willow meadow, along the way until it reaches the old stone bridge; then along the headlands to Wineca’s burh on the old ditch [or ‘dyke’]; from the ditch [or ‘dyke’] to Eadberht’s wood; from the wood along the woodbank to Wansdyke; from the dyke up to the wood; to the old way; along the way to the old wood; from the wood to children’s stone; from the stone along the ridge to the old wall; from the wall to the tongue of land: then to Corston Brook; along Corston Brook to the deep place; from the deep place along the brook to the old ditch [or ‘dyke’]; from the ditch [or ‘dyke’] to the old high-road; along the high-road to the west headland of ‘Wilmington’ (Hill); then back to willow mead. The witnesses of this gift that were present are mentioned whose names are seen to be written below. I, Edgar, king, confirmed this gift with the sign of the cross. I, Dunstan, archbishop [of Canterbury], agreed and subscribed. + I, Oscytel, archbishop [of York], agreed and subscribed. + I, Ælfstan, bishop [of London], agreed and subscribed. + I, Æthelwold, bishop [of Winchester], agreed and subscribed. I, Wynsige, bishop [of Lichfield], agreed and subscribed. + I, Oswald, bishop [of Worcester] agreed and subscribed. + I, Beorhthelm, bishop [of Wells], agreed and subscribed. + I, Oswulf, bishop [of Ramsbury], agreed and subscribed. + I, Ælfwald, bishop [of Sherborne or Crediton]. + I, Eadhelm, bishop [of Selsey]. + I, Eadwulf, bishop [of Elmham]. + I, Wulfric, bishop [? of Hereford]. + I, Leofwine, bishop [of Lindsey]. + I, Ælfstan, bishop [of Sherborne or Crediton]. + I, Ælfhere, dux. + I, Ælfheah, dux. + I, Æthelstan, dux. + I, Æthelwine, dux. + I, Ordgar, dux. + I, Byrhtnoth, dux. + I, Ælfwine, minister.
