A.D. 1042 x 1066. Writ of King Edward declaring that his priests in St Pauls's minster shall be entitled to sake and soke within borough and without, and to as good laws as they ever had in the time of any king or any bishop; and they shall not receive into their community any more priests than their estates can bear and they themselves desire. English

    • King Edward sends friendly greetings to my bishops and my earls and all my thegns in the shires in which my priests in Paul’s minster have land, and I inform you that it is my will that they be entitled to their sake and their soke, both within burh and without, and to as good laws now as fully and completely as in the days of any king or of any bishop, and I forbid them to take into their minster any more priests than their estates can bear and they themselves wish, and I will not permit any man to do them wrong in anything.
