Ea que secundum legem salubriter diffiniuntur, licet solus sermo sufficeret, tamen pro euitanda futuri temporis ambiguitate fidelissimis scripturis et documentis sunt commendanda. Quamobrem ego Adelstanus rex Anglorum, pro eterne retributionis spe et relaxatione peccaminum meorum, ad laudem Domini nominis et ad honorem sancti Pauli apostoli et gentium doctoris, regali auctoritate renouaui atque restauraui libertatem ad monasterium ipsius statutum in Lundonia ciuitate, ubi diu sanctus Erkenwaldus episcopatum tenuit, qui etiam propensius in monasterii studens proficuo, illud priuilegium, quod hactenus in prefato habetur monasterio, in Romulea urbe petebat, aliaque quamplurima priuilegia que nostri antecessores pro redemptione animarum suarum et pro celestis regni desiderio constituerunt in illo monasterio scripta continentur. Si quis uero quod non optamus huius decreti aduersitatem infringere temptauerit aut aliter quam a nobis statutum est mutare presumpserit, sit a consortio Domini nostri Iesu Christi segregatus et cum lupis rapacibus ponatur, et eius ligaturis se constrictum sciat cui Christus claues celestis regni commendans ait, Tu es Petrus et super hanc petram edificabo ecclesiam meam et tibi dabo claues regni celorum, et quodcunque ligaueris super terram erit ligatum et in celis, et quodcunque solueris super terram erit solutum et in celis. Denique adhuc pro ampliori firmitatis testamento omnimodo precipimus atque precipiendo obsecramus, ut maneat ista libertas insolubiliter ab omni seculari seruitio cum omnibus per circuitum ad se rite pertinentibus, campis, pratis, pascuis, siluis, riuulis, tribus exceptis, expeditione, pontis arcisque constructione, et exercitu. Idcirco uero huius donationis munificentiam tam firmiter atque inmobiliter imperamus quia pro hoc a Domino celestem beatitudinem accipere speramus, illo annuente cui est honor et potestas et imperium per infinita secula seculorum. Deinde huius decreti consentiens testis fuit Adelgarus archipresul <et> Oskytel metropolitanus Eboracensis ecclesie, et Ælfstanus Lundoniensis episcopus, et Aðulf Herefordensis basilice episcopus, et Ælfere dux, et Brihtnoð dux, et Ælfric abbas, et Ælfstan abbas, et alii multi.

  • In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Saviour. Those things that are defined to good effect according to law, although speech alone should suffice, yet should be granted with very reliable writings and documents to avoid ambiguity at a future time. Wherefore, I, Æthelstan, king of the English, in the hope of eternal reward and release from my sins, in praise of the name of the Lord and in honour of St Paul the apostle and teacher of the gentiles, by royal authority have renewed and restored the liberty for his monastery established in the city of London, where St Eorcenwald long held the bishopric, who also being more readily zealous in the monastery’s advantage, sought in the Romulean city [i.e., Rome] that privilege that hitherto is held in the aforementioned monastery, and the numerous other privileges that our predecessors established for the salvation of their souls and out of their desire for the heavenly kingdom [that] are held in writing in that monastery. This is in the meantime that franchise that I am establishing with a willing intention that should remain in perpetuity in the oft-mentioned monastery, that is, 10 hides at Sandon with Rothe, and 8 at Ardeley with Luffenhall, and 10 at Belchamp St Pauls with Wickham St Pauls, and 8 at Heybridge, and 12 at Runwell, and 30 at Eadulfesnæsa, and 10 at West Drayton, and 8 at Barnes, and 10 at Neasden with Willesden. I have brought about the composition, writing [and] granting of this charter of privilege with agreeable devotion of spirit in response to the request and admonition of the venerable bishop Theodoric [sic, for Theodred], who then at that time was in charge of the monastery. If anyone indeed should attempt, which we do not want, to bring about opposition to this ordinance or presume to change it to other than what has been decided by us, may he be separated from the fellowship of our Lord Jesus Christ and placed with ravening wolves, and know that he has been bound by the bonds of him to whom Christ when commending the keys of the celestial kingdom said, ‘Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven’. Moreover as still greater evidence of our resolve we instruct in every way and beseech through that instruction that that liberty should remain perpetually [free] of all secular service with all rightly belonging round it, in fields, meadows, pastures, woods, streams, except three: military service, the building of bridge and fortress and military service [sic]. For that reason truly we command so firmly and immoveably the generosity of this gift because we hope to receive in return for this a heavenly blessing from the Lord, affirming Him to Whom there is honour and power and dominion through infinite ages. Then Æthelgar, archbishop [of Canterbury], was as a witness consenting to this ordinance <and> Oscytel, metropolitan of the church of York, and Ælfstan, bishop of London, and Athulf, bishop of the church of Hereford, and Ælfhere, dux, and Beorhtnoth, dux, and Ælfric, abbot, and Ælfstan, abbot, and many others.
